Bike Paths in Sweden II – Malmö

Neighborhood environment

In Malmö, the third largest city in Sweden, 26 % of trips are made by bike (1). In the Skåne region where Malmö city is located, a survey of travel habits is conducted every five years since 2007. According to that survey, travels by car are decreasing while travels by public transport and bike are increasing. More precisely, from 2013 to 2018, the share of travel increased by 5 % for public transport and 4 % for bikes and walking while it decreased by 6 % for cars (1).

In Sweden as a whole, 60 % of travel is still made by cars, and aiming to decrease it by 30 % (2). The share of travel by car in Malmö is already 34 %, so it seems to be going well (1).

In the city, many thought-out biking infrastructures can be seen. There are many crossings with little bumps for cars to slow down for bikers and pedestrians. There are designated paths, lanes, and traffic lights for bikes. There are city bikes that one can use at a very affordable price, 200 SEK per year. There are stops where one can pump up the tire and wash bikes.

I was impressed to find all infrastructures to promote biking in the city rather than driving, and I appreciate them a lot as a bike user for myself. The findings of the travel survey in 2023 will soon be published. It would be interesting to see how much progress the city made since 2018 in terms of an increase in the share of travel by bike.
